A coach is someone who provides an environment for you to determine the path of success through self-awareness and self-improvement.
A mentor is someone who provides guidance based on their experiences and expertise.
There are two important qualities you should look for in selecting a leadership coach.
First, coaches should be certified through an accredited leadership certification program from a major university or accredited institution.
Second, a leadership coach should also be a recognized member of the International Coaching Federation (ICF). The ICF only provides certification to individuals who have met their requirements on completing a rigorous training program. Currently only 42 coaching programs achieve this recognition.
Why are these factors important? The ICF has strict criteria and expects all members to adhere to the principles of ethical conduct; to be competent, and integrate ICF Core Competencies effectively in their work.
Yes. All coaches should be ICF (International Coaching Federation) certified and adhere to the ICF Code of Ethics, referenced under Number 26 Section 4, Confidentiality and Privacy Standards. They maintain the strictest levels of confidentiality with all clients unless release is approved by client or required by law.
The ICF has clear guidelines for the conduct of a certified coach such as:
- Ethically speak to what is to be true of client
- Carefully explain and strive to ensure that client understands nature of coaching
- Provide clear coaching service agreement
- Avoid any sexual or romantic relationship with client
- Respect clients right to terminate coaching agreement
Coaching is about focusing on the clients needs. These needs could range across a variety of topics. Some clients I have helped included those who were:
- Talented in many ways but didn't know how to best leverage their skills
- Experiencing problems getting started on a new assignment at work
- Thrown into a stretch assignment and felt the pressure of the sink or swim environment
- Trying to figure out how to seize an opportunity but were overwhelmed by it all
- Unable to have a healthy work/life balance
- Deciding between a new job opportunity or if they should just stay put
- Unable to find clarity among many competing choices
These are a few examples of how a leadership coach can work with you to achieve your goals.
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar to you?
Coaching sessions vary from client to client. The first session is usually a face-to-face session for about an hour, and will include some assessments and discussion on what coaching can do for you. Most coaching sessions are usually 30 to 60 minutes in length.
I pride myself on flexibility and will be able to coach around your schedule, whether in person, online or on a phone call.
With today's new normal, I offer the option for holding virtual coaching sessions on a variety of platforms.
